"From idea to Mango in six hours"

The hackathon will commence at 16:30.

16:27 - The Hackathon begins!

The team is ready, eager and... hungry! Pizza time - stay tuned!

- Tim

17:50 - The Hackathon begins - for real!

Six pizzas and a couple of ideas later, we're back and ready to get going. Music is starting to pour out of headphones as soon as our CTO Erik has finished dividing tasks.

- Tim

18:25 - Full speed ahead!

The team is in full motion: The first version of the application process flow has been thought out, data sources are being researched and "File - New project..." has been clicked. :)

- Tim

19:04 - Coffee status

Quite a few cups have been consumed by now and more to come: a fresh pot of coffee is beeing brewed as I type.

- Tim

19:52 - Development status

The basic app layout is taking form, and the first version of the application process flow is being revised. We use Agile development methods in all our projects, but revisions with a 60-90 minute interval is a bit unusual.

- Tim

20:21 - Technical difficulties

We're experiencing some serious technical difficulties threatening the whole Hackathon: The coffee machine is currently malfunctioning - probably due to being pushed too hard...

- Tim

20:28 - YES!

The coffee brewer's loose parts have been washed and re-assembled. Problem solved! :)

- Tim

20:30 - Web 2.0 theme

We have decided on a theme and are hacking away. We'll blend right in with Flickr, Tumblr and the like ;) Jakob has already supplied us with an icon set. Here's a teaser!

- Erik

20:54 - Working on the same project at the same time

Just a quick mention of appreciation for Bitbucket (unlimited private code repositories) and Mercurial (a distributed revision control system) - thanks for making it possible to work effectively as a team on a project like this!

- Tim

22:06 - In the Zone

The app is coming along nicely. Two of three main areas of the app are done and the Lab-guys are really in the zone now, focused on finishing the app.

- Tim

22:22 - Pizza 2.0

Preparing for round two of Gambit Labs vs. an undisclosed number of Pizzas...

- Tim

23:05 - Debugging

A certain person in the team is currently headbutting his computer in an effort to squash bugs.
-Interesting method, does it work?
-Eh, 50/50...

- Tim

23:44 - Merging

Our CTO is currently merging the project. Keep your fingers crossed... :)

- Tim

23:59 - We're alive tiles!

- Erik

Launch Icon (Live Tile)

Main screen

  Info about Jagr

00:22 - And cut!

Half an hour over schedule but we're done!

A short intro to our app:

  • Live tile shows the distance from leader to runner up and is updated with actual data every time the app is run.
  • The first pivot screen shows you a list of active NHL players sorted by their carreer total goals.
  • The second and third pivot shows data about Jagr and Selänne, the two players fighting for first place. The information is loaded from Wikipedia.

See you on the market!

- Erik

PS. If you're interested in the technical aspects of the app, check out the behind the scenes page where you'll find more details about the app.

This is Gambit Labs

What strikes me the most when I'm sitting among these energetic people is how lucky I am to have found so incredibly talented people to work with. I mean, sure, I can code - an MSc in Engineering can do that to you I’ve heard - but these guys, they can REALLY code.

It’s humbling to see the absolute focus in their eyes as they’re hacking away on the keyboard, building the application row for row, solving technical problems on the go either solo or in a team effort. Dedicated, smart and trustworthy people – THIS is what Gambit Labs is made of – and I am very proud of being part of this company.

Tim Wallin, CEO and co-founder of Gambit Labs

Hack #1

To celebrate the upcoming Gambit anniversary we at the Lab are getting together to do a Hackathon. Our goal is to come up with an idea for a Windows Phone app, start hacking and have a working version by the end of the day - wrap it up during the weekend - and publish it to the marketplace by Monday.
